OCE Oregon Corrections Enterprises Main Office

Oregon Corrections Enterprises (OCE) is launching the Pre-Release Hiring Program (PREHP). This new program focuses on helping secure employment for incarcerated adults (i.e., adults in custody (AICs)) who are soon to be released to the community. PREHP is part of OCE's People, Programs, and Services (PPS) division.

For Steve Ryan, 2022 was pivotal for his in-plants move toward in-house envelope conversion. The general manager of Oregon Corrections Enterprises says that while discussions to do so started two decades ago, the technology at the time, which Ryan refers to as old-style, non-automated equipment," required a great deal of space and operator know-how. Since that time, he says, the equipment has become highly automated a better fit for his prison in-plants needs.

Michael grew up in Phoenix, Arizona, running away from an abusive home at 12 years old. He went to live with his grandparents. His grandfather would take him to work with him over summer breaks and teach him about life. Life was good, then it wasn't. Michael's grandfather passed away when he was seventeen, leaving a void. He coped the only way he knew how, hiding behind a bottle and then drugs. The need to get high led to poor choices landing him in an Arizona prison at 20. He paroled to his mothers house here in Oregon. He was doing well for a while and then eventually started drinking again. This led to drugs, and Michael started getting in trouble. He tried several times to get sober but failed. Then he found himself running around with the worst group of people, and ended up in prison for the second time, paroling in 2012.

Don was recognized at the TRCI Awards Ceremony in October for his dedication to OCE and TRCI. Don is an Electrician by trade but is willing to fill in wherever he is needed. He completes laundry and furniture deliveries, schedules maintenance for tractors, trailers, and forklifts (to name a few), and ensures the warehouse inventory and orders are staged and ready to go. Don also covers the laundry and woodshop floor when needed. We appreciate his flexibility, dependability, and dedication to OCE and our customers.

DOC is pleased to announce Melanie Doolin has been selected as the Administrator for Oregon Corrections Enterprises (OCE). Melanie began with OCE in July 2018 as the Human Resources (HR) Manager. The HR unit merged with Offender Services and rebranded to People, Programs, and Services where Melanie managed operations for OCE employees and adults in custody. Melanie has been Acting as OCE Administrator since March 15, 2022.

OCE programs seek to provide real opportunities for participants to utilize their training and produce deliverables that go beyond OCE to positively impact the community in many forms. One way we are doing this is through our Graphic Design Program at OSCI.

Council on Criminal Justice was delighted to share that "the web page for our Task Force on Long Sentences, featuring the beautiful art by the OCE team, went live. The reaction has been exceedingly positive, and some of our funders are planning to feature the art (and past OCE designs) in presentations about CCJ's work."

Nobody first thinks of prison as a land of opportunity. For most of the men and women who are sentenced to time in Oregon prisons each year, prison is, at best, a course correction. For some its a forced detour around a road that was falling apart. For others, a prison cell is a timeout from the life they look forward to jumping right back into.

Its a niche labelIf Levis is the giant of the jean world, Prison Blues is more like an ant scurrying underfoot. But the brands affordable clothes have lately caught the attention of young, fashion-conscious folks in Japan. A flip through Prison Blues tagged photos on Instagram reveals a plethora of Japanese fans wearing its midnight-blue jeans and chunky denim jackets with leopard-print coats, technicolor Coogi sweaters and vintage neckties.
